Startable is an eight-week summer program in which up to 48 students ages 16-18 learn about and become actively engaged in entrepreneurship and maker skills as means to: gain the tools, confidence and resources to start and operate their own businesses; gain skills that can be useful in future employment; gain familiarity and training on various pieces of software and hardware equipment as marketable job skills; define alternate post-high-school opportunities for those not pursuing college degrees; and engage with business and maker resources in their community, available to them now and in the future.
Innovation Works seeks a highly motivated and experienced educator to serve as a summer instructor for its Startable program (startablepgh.org). This full-time, flat-rate consultancy will be from 8:30am-5:30pm, Monday through Friday, June 19 – August 18, 2017 and will be based out of AlphaLab Gear and TechShop, both in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood. There will also be several planning sessions the instructor must attend prior to June 19th.
For the Pittsburgh region, this innovative program creates a pipeline of diverse young entrepreneurs for inclusion in the regional startup economy. The program uses a project-based learning methodology in which students ideate a product, learn business skills using the AlphaLab Gear curriculum, learn how to make their product using the tools at TechShop, assemble a business plan and budget, pitch for investment, then manufacture, market and distribute their products. The program culminates in a capstone event that is part open-air market, part pitch competition and part awards ceremony.
Responsibilities and Duties
The instructor acts as one of several teachers for the Startable program, with primary instructional and oversight responsibility for 12 students. However, the instructor, as part of a team of instructors, is ultimately responsible for the success of all students, setting high expectations and helping them achieve their best. This is a fast-paced and rigorous program; the instructor must be enthusiastic, flexible and willing to put in the time and energy necessary to help all students succeed.
