Job Summary

The primary role is to take a leadership position in the identification, development and successful commercialization of early-stage technology-based companies. The successful candidate should possess relevant experience in advanced IT domains including internet, information technology, and computer engineering deal flow and possesses a good working relationship with local universities.

IW’s EIRs provide strategic business assistance and lead IW’s investment efforts with early-stage technology companies over a spectrum of technologies. The members of the EIR Team have complementary skills and experiences and provide extraordinary breadth of resources for companies in one or more of the following areas: software/internet, information technology, hardware, life sciences, energy and advanced materials.

An EIR works closely with CEO’s, management teams and Boards of Directors of specific companies to help them define, plan, attract resources, and execute against strategic initiatives in the areas of fundraising/financial management, product development/commercialization, sales and marketing, and organizational development. For those companies that receive IW investment, the EIR will serve as a Board Observer.

The EIR will serve as an ambassador for IW in the community, working with partner organizations in the community, serving as judge, Advisor, and network access gatekeeper for partners, companies and events including various local showcases of companies such as the 3 Rivers Venture Fair, business plan competitions, particularly at local universities. In addition, the EIR will serve as a speaker or panel member as requested by partners

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work closely with other members of the EIR team to leverage complementary industry and functional expertise while maintaining individual ownership and responsibilities for a set of companies
  • Provide guidance and assistance to entrepreneurs and early stage technology companies, including companies participating in IW’s AlphaLab and AlphaLab Gear Accelerator programs
  • Identify high-potential companies with the potential to drive significant economic growth and partner with them to define a business and financial plan to help them execute against growth objectives
  • Work with companies to define a strategic operating plan and provide coaching, assistance, and connections to help companies reach their objectives
  • Lead Innovation Works’ efforts in due diligence of the market and growth potential of candidate investment companies
  • Manage a portfolio of companies and represent Innovation Works’ interests as a Board Observer for those companies

Secondary Qualifications

  • Promote entrepreneurship and technology in the region by representing IW at various community-related events
  • Define and drive projects that enhance IW’s ability to provide resources and knowledge to the regional technology community
  • Prior C-Level management experience with both start-up and large technology companies preferred

Required Qualifications and Skills

Proven record of accomplishments of success and performance in the following areas:

  • Significant industry expertise (minimum 12 years) in the technology sectors outlined above, including direct functional responsibility for defining, building and launching technology-based products to the commercial market, and other functional areas.
  • Breadth of technology and commercial market experience preferred with the ability to quickly learn about new industries, business models, and technologies
  • Prior experience in investment-oriented or management consultant industries a plus
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or business required, MBA preferred
